The Evolution of Storage Walls for Hybrid Spaces—Private, Shared and Professional

 |  News

Ever Evolving System by Level Office Landscape is a hybrid solution designed for both the office and the smart worker’s home, capable of shaping space while simultaneously containing and dividing it. Drawing inspiration from Angelo Mangiarotti’s interwalls and the subsequent evolution of storage walls, the system rethinks the workplace as a flexible environment—one that can be reconfigured with ease as needs change.

The First Examples of Storage Walls

During an interview for Lezioni di design, a Rai Educational series focused on technological innovation in the home, Angelo Mangiarotti described Cub8, a product he designed in 1967 and produced by Poltronova. Founded in Florence in the 1960s by visionary entrepreneur Sergio Cammilli, Poltronova was quick to champion some of the most radical objects by Archizoom, Paolo Portoghesi’s early postmodern experiments, Ettore Sottsass’s irreverent archetypes—and Cub8, Italy’s first true storage wall.

“Anonymous in the right way—the interest lies in the object itself, not in the fact that it was designed by me,” Mangiarotti said at the time. “This, in my view, should be a defining quality of design: standing slightly behind the object and its outcome, to ensure a much longer life. That is the quality of Cub8.”

It is worth noting that Cub8 was the first true interwall system: a storage unit based on a square module and a plastic joint connecting vertical and horizontal planes. An industrial piece of furniture that did more than divide space—it actively created it, replacing traditional masonry partitions within the home.

Rethinking Storage Walls at Level Office Landscape

A New Normal That Blurs Work and Private Life

Working today means breaking down barriers and feeling at ease in environments that encourage both physical and mental fluidity. Contemporary professionals no longer remain fixed behind a desk—and in many cases, no longer have one at all.

At the same time, smart working is not universally embraced. For some, the overlap of professional and private life within the same domestic space feels constraining rather than liberating. These are the workers eager to return to the office, drawn to shared benches, sofas and social tables that foster connection—above all, social connection. What many miss most is the exchange of perspectives, knowledge and professional dialogue within a secure and psychologically reassuring environment.

The Key Word: Flexibility

Over recent years, workplaces have been radically reconfigured, becoming elastic and adapting to work activities—rather than forcing work to adapt to space, as was common before the rise of activity-based working. Flexibility is now essential. The notions of “where” and “when” have become increasingly irrelevant: emails are answered, documents reviewed, and calls made from home or during breaks.

In an era when everything is easily accessible, pairing comfort with work no longer feels contradictory. The world of constant deadlines, glaring screens and breathless meeting rooms evolves into something more humane—integrating comfort, inhabiting new contexts and offering alternative ways of working.

Ever Evolving System: Level’s Storage Wall Reimagined

Born in 2021 from research into spatial hybridization, Ever Evolving System is Level Office Landscape’s modular storage wall system. Conceived both as a simple cabinet with hinged or folding doors and as a divider between functionally distinct zones, it is available in a wide range of finishes and colors—over 50 melamine options.

The system balances projecting volumes with voids that transform into seating, shelving and open compartments, all customizable to individual needs and preferences. Integrated solutions include lockers, benches, sofas and seating niches. Whether set into alcoves or embedded within the depth of storage units, the system can also incorporate technical compartments for TV screens and kitchenettes.

Modules are available in multiple widths (45, 50, 90 and 100 cm), with depths of 35 and 45 cm—or 60 cm for kitchen and wardrobe functions. Heights range from 200 cm up to full-height configurations. A defining feature of Ever Evolving System is its use of bold colors—true chromatic accents that identify and distinguish different functions, almost mapping them into thematic zones.

The system also includes felt panels and backings, as well as soft upholstered textile elements, designed to create spaces for conversation, privacy, focused work or quick calls.
